Fraud Warning: Counterfeit Claims Checks Used in Craigslist Transactions

Erie Insurance is investigating counterfeit claim checks sent to individuals throughout the United States for payment for goods sold on Craigslist. The checks are in excess of the cost for the goods. Consumers are being directed to deposit the check and wire the difference to a third party.

This appears to be a variation of an overpayment scam which is often used to victimize online sellers. The scenario is described on the National Consumers League (NCL) Web site.

Consumers who receive a check from Erie Insurance Exchange for payment for items sold on Craigslist should notify ERIE by calling Customer Service at (800) 458-0811, ext. 3000. Consumers should not deposit the check.
